About us

The Victoria Historical Society is open to anyone interested in learning about, promoting or preserving the history of Victoria and British Columbia, Canada. We are a member society of The BC Historical Federation.

Meetings

We meet on the fourth Thursday of each month (except June, July, August & December) at 7:30PM, at the James Bay New Horizons Centre, 234 Menzies St, Victoria. Meetings consist of a short business agenda followed by a guest speaker. We also have a Christmas dinner & guest speaker in December at a different location. Visitors are always welcome...your first visit is free!

September 24th, 2009: Dave Obee: Making the news
Dave Obee, Times Colonist editorial page editor, wrote the book "Making the news" about the TC and its predecessors and the people involved in reporting the news of this newspaper, the oldest continuously operating daily paper in Canada.
October 22nd, 2009: Audrey Thomas: The University Women's Club.
The 100th anniversary of the club was in 2008. Audrey Thomas will outline some of the developments and achievements of the century, in this, Canadian Women's History Month.
November 26th, 2009: Jeanette Taylor:The Quadra Story: the history of Quadra Island
Author Jeanette Taylor follows up on her 2008 book "Tidal Passages" (on the Discovery Islands) with this rich story (and stories) about Quadra Island.
December 9th, 2009 (Wed.):Christmas Dinner and Seasonal Celebration.
Christmas dinner for members and guests at the University Club, on West Campus Road off Gordon Head Road. Sylvia Van Kirk will speak on Celebrating Victoria Pioneers: the MacDonalds of Armadale. Senator William MacDonald and his wife were early Vancouver Island pioneers who achieved significant accomplishments in their times. Dinner cost is $32. Tickets can be purchased at the November 26th meeting or by mail.
January 28th, 2010: Dr. Patricia Roy: British Columbia a century ago
Dr. Roy, noted British Columbia historian, and former president of the BC Historical Federation, will give an illustrated talk on the first decade of the 1900's which saw the formation of our modern province.
February 25th, 2010: Michael Layland: The toponomy of Vancouver Island
Michael Layland is a map historian and former president of the VHS. He will describe how and when the place names were given and appeared on maps and charts.
March 25th, 2010: Marie Elliott: Bringing Out the Furs: The Last Fur Brigade to Fort Vancouver in 1847.
Marie Elliott, member of the VHS and author of a recent book Fort St. James and New Caledonia: where British Columbia began will give an illustrated talk about this historic aspect of B.C. history, with Victoria connections.
April 22nd, 2010: Mike Vouri: San Juan Island, its History and BC Connections.
Mike Vouri is the Chief of Interpretation for the San Juan Islands National Historic Park.
May 27th, 2010 (Annual General Meeting): IMPORTANT: Please note that this meeting only will start at 7:00pm
Ken Johnson: Victoria's Royal Theatre
Mr Johnson has been connected with the Royal Theatre in many ways. He received a citation from the Hallmark Society for his work in restoration of the facade. The Royal has been in operation for over 100 years.

Membership

Annual membership fees are: family $40, individual $35, student $25.
Our membership year is September through August. Those who join mid-year pay a prorated amount in their first year.
Fees include a subscription to BC History (formerly BC Historical News), a quarterly publication of the BCHF, as well as copies of our own society's newsletter.
To join, please send a completed copy of the membership form along with your payment to the membership secretary at the address below. Memberships can also be purchased at our meetings.

News

Ron Greene, President of the Victoria Historical Society is pleased to announce that a scholarship has been awarded to University of Victoria Graduate student Amy Mattewson. The scholarship is awarded to a graduate student studying Canadian history, preferably B.C. history. Selection is made by the University of Victoria Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of History.
