About us

The Victoria Historical Society is open to anyone interested in learning about, promoting or preserving the history of Victoria and British Columbia, Canada. We are a member society of The BC Historical Federation.

Meetings

We meet on the fourth Thursday of each month (except June, July, August & December) at 7:30PM, at the James Bay New Horizons Centre, 234 Menzies St, Victoria. Meetings consist of a short business agenda followed by a guest speaker. We also have a Christmas dinner & guest speaker in December at a different location. Visitors are always welcome...your first visit is free!

Schedule of speakers & events for Sept. 2011 to May 2012

September 22nd, 2011: Glen Parfitt: An Evening with Parfitt Brothers
Glen Parfitt will give a illustrated talk about the history of his family's construction firm, founded by the 5 Parfitt brothers in Victoria in 1907.
October 27th, 2011: Susan Mayse: Victoria, Crown Jewel of British Columbia
Writer Susan Mayse, a fourth-generation Vancouver Islander, will share her interest in the development of the Greater Victoria region through her recent book, of the above title. Rescheduled from last year.
November 24th, 2011: Nancy M. Anderson: Alexander Caulfield Anderson: The Pathfinder.
Nancy M. Anderson will speak about her ancestor's important role in developing new brigade trails for the Hudson's Bay Company in New Caledonia in the late 1840s. Her biography of A.C. Anderson will be published this fall.
December 8th, 2011 (6 PM for 6:30 PM):Holiday Banquet at the UVic University Club
Christmas dinner at the University Club, on West Campus Road off Gordon Head Road. For complete details see the Winter 2011/2012 newsletter. Our speaker author/story-teller Sylvia Olsen will share her expertise in the history Coast Salish Woolworking: an amazing story of innovation, hard work and cultural fusion [Sylvia's book won the Lt-Gov’s Medal for Historical Writing for 2010].
January 26th, 2012: Bob Griffin: Feeding Victoria: 100 Years of Food and Drink in Victoria
Bob's talk will be based on the new book of this title which he has co-authored with Nancy Oke.
February 23rd, 2012: Ken Johnson: History of Beacon Hill Park
Ken is the President of the Hallmark Society.
March 22nd, 2012: Professor Barry Gough : Juan de Fuca's Strait
Based on his forthcoming book on the history of the strait.
April 26th, 2012: Joan Giles: Forty Years in Forty Movements: A History of the Victoria Conservatory of Music.
May 24th, 2012 (7:00 PM): Sylvia Van Kirk: Thomas & Eliza Harris: The First Mayor & Mayoress of Victoria.
In honour of the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Victoria, VHS vice-president Sylvia Van Kirk will end the season with a talk on Thomas & Eliza Harris: The First Mayor & Mayoress of Victoria. (N.B. Our meeting this evening will start at 7 pm, to accommodate the reporting and business of our Annual General Meeting.)

Membership

Annual membership fees are: family $42, individual $37, student $20.
Our membership year is September through August. Those who join mid-year pay a pro-rated amount in their first year.
Fees include a subscription to BC History (formerly BC Historical News), a quarterly publication of the BCHF, as well as copies of our own society's newsletter.
To join, please send a completed copy of the membership form along with your payment to the membership secretary at the address below. Memberships can also be purchased at our meetings.
